French President Francois Hollande threatens tabloid with legal action over affair report

By Daniel S Levine,

French President Francois Hollande said that he is threatening legal action against the tabloid Closer, which published a report claiming that the unmarried politician is having in a relationship with an actress who campaigned for him in 2012.

Hollande, 59, said that he is “profoundly deplores the violations of the respect of private life, to which he has the right, like any citizen,” in a statement to Agence France-Presse, reports The New York Times. Although Hollande isn’t married, he is in a relationship with another woman. However, Closer claims that it has photographs that prove that he is also seeing actress Julie Gayet at a Paris apartment building.

Closer claims that the woman in the pictures is Gayet and says that Hollande is the man, who is seen with a helmet over his face.

It has long been rumored that Gayet and Hollande are in a relationship, notes the BBC. In March 2013, Gayet did complain to prosecutors about bloggers who insinuated that the two were seeing each other.

The Times notes that the French media typically does not report on the love lives of the country’s politicians, which makes Closer’s report surprising. Still, the magazine has been building a reputation of angering major celebrities. It is the same magazine that published topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge in 2012.

Hollande’s current partner is Valerie Trierweiler. He had four children with Segolene Royal, a fellow Socialist politician.
