Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, was injured in a skiing accident in Switzerland and has been ordered by doctors to rest for the next three weeks. She has cancelled appointments and will not make it to an economic forum.

The 59-year-old fractured her pelvis while on a Christmas vacation to the Engadin region in Switzerland, reports Bloomberg. She will still be able to fulfill her duties as leader of the German government, but has had to cancel a Warsaw visit for next week and will not go to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland this month.

“It goes without saying that as chancellor, she is capable of acting as well as communicating fully,” spokesman Steffen Seibert told the media, reports Sky News.

After the accident, Merkel continued to work, thinking that her fall on the slopes was “only a bruise, even though it already was painful,” Seibert said. However, when she visited her doctors on Friday, they told her that she needed to lie down for weeks.

Merkel has also been forced to reschedule a meeting with her party, the Christian Democratic Union, that was supposed to take place over the weekend. She was also supposed to meet with the Luxembourg prime minister in Berlin Thursday, but that has been cancelled.
