Jennifer Lawrence is constantly proving she’s just like us. This time, American Hustle costume designer Michael Wilkinson has revealed he had to make back-ups of her wardrobe because of her messy eating habits.
Wilkinson explained Lawrence’s character, Rosalyn, in the Oscar-nominated film was originally supposed to spill champagne on herself in the low-cut gown she’s seen wearing at one point in the film. For that reason, they made a few extras.
“And I’m kind of glad we did,” Wilkinson told Vanity Fair, “because Jennifer Lawrence is a very . . . let’s say . . . raw and intuitive young lady, and she’s not against eating Doritos and snack food in her costume. So we were glad that we had a couple [backups].”
Frito-Lay told Elle about Lawrence eating Doritos, "Back in the seventies that would have been the experience consumers would have had with eating Doritos, so technically, it would have been factually accurate to have that Doritos cheese problem."
This easily fit in the film’s budget, because the dress was intentionally made to look cheap. The fabric cost them $3.99 per yard.
Lawrence wears the dress when she kisses her husband’s (played by Christian Bale) mistress (Amy Adams). Wilkinson explained the thought process behind it, saying of director David O. Russell, "David really had it set in his mind that she would be wearing this dress that she just poured herself into.”
He added, "He wanted to see every single lump and bump. There had to be a sense of, 'Is she going to fall out of it?' It had this dangerous feeling to it, which matched her own dangerous mental landscape."
