Sony Pictures is still looking to make a sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop, the successful 2009 comedy that starred Kevin James. The studio is reportedly in talks with Andy Fickman to direct.
Fickman will be the only major new piece in the creative team behind the sequel, reports The Hollywood Reporter, which first confirmed the news. James will reprise his role as the dedicated mall security officer and will co-write with Nick Bakay again. Todd Garner will be producing again with Adam Sandler under the Happy Madison production banner. Steve Carr was behind the camera for the first Paul Blart.
According to TheWrap, shooting could start as soon as April.
Although Paul Blart came out back in 2009, it makes perfect sense for Sony to pursue a sequel. The film grossed $143.3 million domestically and added $36 million overseas. James is also still a popular actor, having recently appeared in Grown Ups 2 with Sandler.
As for Fickman, his last film was Billy Crystal’s Parental Guidance. He has also directed several Disney productions, including Race to Witch Mountain and The Game Plan.
