Mark Zuckerberg leads philanthropy in 2013

By Amanda Stewart,

Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, led to a steady rise in philanthropy among the wealthy last year. The number of gifts $1 million or more rose 57 percent in 2013.

The couple donated 18 million Facebook shares in 2013 to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, according to The LA Times. The Chronicle of Philanthropy listed that the couple gave $992.2 million, which is the largest amount given in 2013.

Zuckerberg and his wife were the biggest donors in 2013, however, they also led the way for many other philanthropists.

The chairman of Nike Inc., Phil Knight and his wife, gave the second largest donation of the year with a pledge of $500 million to the Oregon Health and Science University Foundation.

The Telegraph reported that 15 Americans donated $100 million last year. The number of donations certainly increased in the past year.

Third was the mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, who donated $350 million to Johns Hopkins University.
