This year’s Super Bowl will take a more classical turn, as it was announced today that "The Star-Spangled Banner" will be sung by world renowned opera singer Renee Fleming.
Instead of the typical pop or country star, Fleming will grace the crowd with her incredible soprano vocals. The Associated Press stated that Fleming is the first opera singer to ever perform at the Super Bowl, which will take place this year at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Fleming has won several awards including Grammys and a National Medal of Arts. She has performed at numerous distinguished events such as President Obama’s inaugural ceremony and has even sung at Buckingham palace for Queen Elizabeth II. As for sporting events, Fleming has performed at a 2003 World Series game at Yankee Stadium in New York.
The Los Angeles Times reports that it is unknown whether or not the soprano singer will be accompanied by musicians or not for the performance. However, football fans will surely be in for a treat to be able to listen to such an amazing singer on such an important game day.
