BBC's Sherlock is a hit across the world, with high ratings in the United States, China and the U.K.. The modern day retelling of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as John Watson.
Last night, Sherlock returned to the United States with the first episode of season three airing on PBS but the U.K. is already on the final episode of season three, "His Last Vow."
"His Last Vow" drew in over 8.8 million viewers, which was a 32.1 percent share of the viewing audience at the time, Metro reported.
Steven Moffat, co-creator of Sherlock, is still in shock over the success of the show.
"It isn’t supposed to be like this, This show, which we all thought would be our vanity project destined for 3 million in the ratings and possibly an award from an obscure European festival, has become a barnstorming international phenomenon," said Moffat.
The first episode in season three had over 9.2 million viewers, which is one of the largest premieres ever in the U.K., The Hollywood Reporter added.
Both Cumberbatch and Freeman are set to return in the fourth season of Sherlock.
