Showtime puts in series orders for Philip Seymour Hoffman comedy and drama 'The Affair'

By Daniel S Levine,

Showtime has decided to move forward with Happyish, a comedy pilot that stars Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman. The network has also put in a series order for a new drama called The Affiar.

Hayypish was formerly known as Trending Down. Hoffman will star as an advertising executive who tries to adapt to a changing system that doesn’t need him. According to Deadline, his co-stars are Kathryn Hahn and Rhys Ifan. Hahn (Crossing Jordan, We’re The Millers) will play the wife of Hoffman’s character.

The project was written and created by Shalom Auslander and developed by Ken Kwapis. John Cameron Mitchell was the pilot’s director.

Entertainment Weekly reports that The Affair stars Dominic West (The Wire), Maura Tierney (ER) and Joshua Jackson (Fringe). It will tell the story of affairs from the male and female perspectives.

Both shows received 10-episode orders.

Showtime also announced that Years of Living Dangerously will start on April 13, as will Californication and Nurse Jackie. Penny Dreadful starts on May 11.
