'Star Wars: Episode VII' rumors give Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia bigger roles and Obi-Wan Kenobi a daughter

By Daniel S Levine,

Although Star Wars: Episode VII rumors have slowed in recent weeks, they’ve picked up again in the New Year. Over the weekend, a flurry of rumors started, covering everything from the cast to the plot.

On Friday, there was a report from TheWrap that Jesse Plemons, who appeared on Breaking Bad, was in the running for a role and is going to have a second audition with director (and now co-writer) J.J. Abrams.

A day later, The Hollywood Reporter did confirm that Plemons did have a meeting with Abrams, but that was only a small part of that site’s report. While names like Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael B. Jordan, Alex Pettyfer and Saoirse Ronan frequently came up in reports last fall, THR notes that Michael Fassbender, Hugo Weaving and Girls’ Adam Driver are all in the mix now.

THR also revealed why screenwriter Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) left the project to Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. Arndt reportedly wanted to focus on the children of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess leia (Carrie Fisher). But Abrams wants to give audiences one last adventure starring the Original Trilogy trio and then introduce the new characters for the following movies. Some of the characters Arndt created have been pushed out of the picture.

The report states that Abrams met Fassbender in December and has been talking with actors even while the script was in the works. He is looking at Driver for a part, while Weaving could play an Imperial commander.

Probably the craziest part of THR’s report is that Abrams is looking to cast a twentysomething actress who is black or a mixed race. This actress would play Obi-Wan Kenobi’s daughter or granddaughter. Clearly, Obi-Wan stayed pretty busy as a hermit on Tatooine.

Episode VII hits theaters on Dec. 18, 2015 and stars R2-D2.
