Tennessee Titans fire coach Mike Munchak

By Michelle Kapusta,

The Tennessee Titans have fired coach Mike Munchak after three seasons.

According to NFL.com, the team confirmed Saturday that the head coach had been let go.

Munchak had a tenure with the organization dating back to 1982, when he was drafted by the franchise, then known as the Houston Oilers. He played left guard for 12 seasons and became an assistant coach in 1994.

Despite such a long history with the team, Munchak’s below .500 record as the head coach forced team CEO and president Tommy Smith to make the move.

In his three seasons at the helm, the 53-year-old, who took over after Jeff Fisher’s departure, was 22-26 overall. He was 2-20 against teams with a winning record, ESPN notes.

Munchak had one year remaining on his contract.

The team has not announced what direction they would like to go in for a new coach, but many former NFL head coaches have been let go from their respective teams and are looking for a new home.
