Vladmir Putin praises Elton John and rules out discrimination at the Winter Olympics

By Marcina Zaccaria ,

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised music icon Elton John, who used his recent Russian show to express support for the local gay community. Elton John dedicated his show in Moscow to a man killed for being gay in South Russia.

Putin said Elton John, who is openly gay, is quite loved. He also called the singer an outstanding person.

According to Reuters, when Putin was asked if he would meet gay celebrities like Elton John and Ian McKellen to discuss his policies toward homosexuals, Putin said he would "definitely" talk to them. Putin added that he would also meet representatives of the U.S. or other countries regardless of their sexual orientation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Putin told the AFP that people have different sexual orientations, adding that he welcomes all athletes and all guests of the Olympics.

Putin said last Friday that gay people visiting the Winter Olympics should feel welcome. He asserted that there would be “no discrimination” at the Games.
