The Week In Hip Hop: The 56th Annual Grammy Awards

By Terri-Lee Taylor,

This week, Rap artists dominated the Grammys. Jay Z opened the show with wife Beyonce, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were named Best New Artist and Kendrick Lamar performed an unforgettable mash-up with Imagine Dragons.

Power couple Jay-Z and Beyonce opened the show with a live performance of "Drunk In Love" from Beyonce's self-titled album. According to Hollywood Reporter, this was Beyonce's first televised performance since the release of her Beyonce album. It was also the second year in a row that Jay Z has performed at the Grammys.

It has been an insane year for both Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Both The Heist and Good Kid, M.A.A.D City received overwhelmingly positive reviews and were ranked among the best albums of 2013. Both albums were also nominated for the Best Rap Album, among Drake's Nothing Was The Same, Kanye West's Yeezus and Jay Z's Magna Carta...Holy Grail. Macklemore won the award but later he shared some surprising thoughts on the win, some of which he shared on Instagram.

"You got robbed. I wanted you to win" said Macklemore in a screenshot of the text message he sent to Kendrick Lamar. In the caption, Macklemore explains his thoughts on his win, "My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album... I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it's proper respect.."
