By Marcina Zaccaria,

Will Smith breaks his silence over the death of James Avery, who portrayed patriarch Judge Philip Banks in more than 140 episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Avery died on Dec. 31 at age 68 in Glendale, California due to complications from open heart surgery.

Will Smith, who portrayed Avery’s nephew on the popular sitcom, said that some of his greatest lessons in acting and being a human being came from James Avery, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Smith wrote in a Facebook post, “Every young man needs an Uncle Phil. Rest in Peace," according to TMZ.

Other co-stars from the popular television show also expressed their remorse. For many, James Avery was a second father to them.

The Fresh Prince ran from 1990-96 on NBC. Avery’s other roles after the series included Shredder in the 1987-93 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and James Rhodes in the Iron Man animated series.
