If the first release of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was too PG-13 for you, Paramount and Will Ferrell have a surprise for you. A new, R-rated cut is heading to theaters in time for the film’s Blu-ray release.
The Legend Continues will be back in theaters for only a week, starting next Friday. The new cut will include exactly 763 new jokes.
“We started talking and realized, we can replace every single joke in the movie with another joke,” director/co-writer Adam McKay told The New York Times.
McKay and Ferrell did something similar for the original Anchorman, crafting The Lost Movie for the DVD release. The Lost Movie was practically an entirely different film, made up of deleted material and alternate jokes. While that was relegated to home video, Paramount didn’t want to do the same for Anchorman 2’s alternate cut. McKay told the Times that Paramount actually insisted that it get a theatrical release.
“Every joke we did in the theatrical, we would shoot three or four alts to it,” McKay told Entertainment Weekly. “And in almost all of the cases, there was another really good choice.”
You can check out our review for the original Anchorman 2 here. The first cut was 119 minutes, which is already long for a comedy, and the new cut will be even longer, McKay promised.
