BAFTA Awards full winners list: '12 Years A Slave' wins top prize, 'Gravity' wins Best British film

By Daniel S Levine,

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave got a significant boost during the last major awards ceremony before the Oscars next month, the EE BAFTAS. The awards were handed out in London today by the British Academy of Film & Television Arts.

McQueen’s acclaimed film about Solomon Northup won the top prize of the night, Best Film, but only won one other award. Star Chiwetel Ejiofor won for Best Actor, beating a field that included all the same nominees for the Best Actor Oscar, save for Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips).

Gravity was a big winner though, with director Alfonso Cuaron winning in a field that also included nearly all the same Oscar nominees. The movie also won Best British Film and Emmanuel Lubezki won for his stunning cinematography. Gravity also won Special Visual Effects and Sound.

The third in this year’s trifecta of Oscar favorites, David O. Russell’s American Hustle, also had a good night. Russell and Eric Warren Singer won for Best Original Screenplay and Jennifer Lawrence beat 12 Years’ Lupita Nyong’o for Best Supporting Actress.
