Changes to Emmys include category splits, different voting procedures

By Andrew Wilson,

With a merge of movie and miniseries being lumped in the same Emmy category three years ago, the Television Academy has decided to split the two once again, as well as split Outstanding Reality Program.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, movie and miniseries category will return to be separate categories.

The Academy that Outstanding Reality Program will now be two categories, Outstanding Structured Reality Program and Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Duck Dynasty would be an example of the latter, while Antiques Roadshow would be the former. No changes will be made for Outstanding Reality-Competition.

Entertainment Weekly also noted Outstanding Voice-Over will be split into Outstanding Narrator and Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.

Splitting categories, as well as adding Outstanding Technical Direction/Camerawork/Video, also means more nominees and potential number of nominees. The TV Academy is changing the voting process for the Outstanding Comedy and Drama Series categories; under its new rules, each may now have as many as seven nominees.

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Monday, Aug. 25 on NBC.
