Actress Ellen Page announced that she is gay at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive Conference on Friday.
The Juno actress, 26, was there to speak on behalf of the cause of human rights. Within her speech she mentioned the football star Michael Sam, who she called “a hero." Sam just might be the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team. She even scrutinized the media for photos that were taken of her that most found unflattering and not feminine enough.
The Juno star explained that, “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years, because I was scared to be out,” notes CNN.
She received a standing ovation the second she made her announcement. Many have taken to social media sites such as Twitter to show their respect and thoughts to the actress.
The Human Rights Campaign has released a video of her speech, which you can see below.
Page was nominated for an Oscar for Juno and is set to work on a gay rights drama with Julianne Moore.
