Hip-hop group, De La Soul, chose to stir interest in their upcoming album in an innovative way. The group made their catalog available for 25 hours on Valentine’s Day.
According to the Associated Press, Sophia Chang, a manager for GZA, Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest and former record label executive said, "From a creative standpoint and a marketing standpoint, I think it's terrific. I think everybody's talking about them. I think they're all over social media. I think they remind people of how incredibly, incredibly influential and innovative that album was."
Popular songs from the band included “Me, Myself, and I,” “Buddy,” and “Potholes in My Lawn.” The group released material from all of their seven albums for free on wearedelasoul.com. In signing up for free download, fans gave their e-mail addresses for a subscription list. The music was available from Friday, Feb. 14 until Saturday, Feb. 15.
This was a new strategy for the release of the new album which is expected later this year, according to Business Week. De La Soul is expected to release the EP, Premium Soul on the Rocks, next month.
