Jimmy Fallon proved to fans last night that he isn’t going to change at all just because he’s hosting a show with the most famous name in television, NBC’s The Tonight Show. In fact, in his first episode, he’s already created a sketch that’s poised to go viral.
During his opening monologue, the Saturday Night Live veteran thanked all the legends that preceded him, including Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno (again). TV Guide notes that he got choked up when he thanked his parents, his wife and his young daughter. He actually left the stage for a moment before re-entering to continue his monologue.
When Fallon finally sat at the desk, he joked how whoever bet $100 against him getting this gig would have to pay up. That started a parade of top-shelf New York-based stars coming in to slam $100 bills on the desk. They included Robert De Niro, Mariah Carey, Tina Fey, Kim Kardashian, Seth Rogen, Joe Namath, Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Mike Tyson, Sarah Jessica Parker and Lady Gaga. Stephen Colbert came in last, dumping $100-worth of pennies on Fallon before taking a selfie with him.
Fallon’s first guest was Will Smith, who doesn’t actually have a movie to promote at the moment. Still, it showed that Fallon isn’t giving up his creativity when it comes to sketches. The two performed the “Evolution of Hip-Hop Dancing.”
His first musical guest was U2, who performed a stripped-down version of their Oscar-nominated song, “Ordinary Love,” notes CNN. They also performed “Invisible” on the roof of 30 Rockefeller Center.
