A missing U.S. college student was found dead in a Rome railway tunnel on Saturday after he had been missing for two days.
Railroad police say that 21-year-old John Durkin had been hit by a train, reports Reuters. Durkin was from Rye Beach, N.H.
Before going missing, he had been with friends in the Campo de Fiori area in Rome. The historic area is home to many pubs that college students in the area frequent.
According to CBS News, he was a student at Bates College, but was in Italy as part of a study abroad program with Trinity College Rome.
Bates President Clayton Spencer said in a statement, "This is a time of deep sadness for our community and for so many people who knew and loved John." He added, "We are profoundly sad and share the tremendous grief of his family."
The college junior's body was discovered after someone on a train spotted while going through the tunnel that runs between the Vatican and Trastevere stations.
