John Paul Henson died Friday at the age of 48. Henson had taken over the Muppets empire after his father Jim Henson, the Muppets creator, also passed away at a young age.
Henson suffered from a sudden heart attack according to USA Today.
Henson left behind his wife Gyongi, and two daughters, Katrina, 15, and Sydney, 10.
Record Online reported that Henson was not only a mastermind behind the Muppets but also performed as a Muppet himself, playing Sweetums since the late 80's up until 2005. He was also serving as a shareholder and boardmember of his father's company.
The Jim Henson Company released a statement saying, "It is with great sadness that we confirm that John Henson, son of Jim and Jane Henson and brother to Lisa, Cheryl, Brian and Heather, died at age 48 of a sudden massive heart attack on Friday."
The statement noted that Henson passed away while at his Saugerties, N.Y. home. One of his daughters was with him at the time. "A private service is being planned."
