Former talk show host, Rosie O’Donnell announced she underwent weight-loss surgery in July 2013.
The 51-year-old, announced she had lost 40 pounds since her Vertical Gastric Sleeve, a procedure where part of the stomach is removed, according to E! News.
O’Donnell revealed her secret at the annual Go Red For Women luncheon, sponsored by the American Heart Association, in Detroit.
"I did what many woman do, and I did not take care of myself," O’Donnell said. "And that's why I'm here, to try to get women to know you're worth it, take care of yourself and know the symptoms."
The keynote speaker went on to describe her experience with a heart attack she had in August 2012. After the health setback, the comedian decided it was time she changed her lifestyle, according to People. O’Donnell reduced her intake of red meat, carbohydrates and sugar and began exercising with wife Michelle Rounds.
Her spokesperson, Cindi Berger, said she tried to lose weight on her own but was not able to. "It was a life saving surgery," Berger said, "But it's only a tool, not a cure."
