Christian Bale has shown several times that he can completely transform himself for a role and may just get another chance to do that. He is reportedly David Fincher’s top choice to play Steve Jobs if Fincher winds up directing Sony’s Aaron Sorkin-written biopic.
A source for TheWrap claims that Fincher met with Sony executive Amy Pascal recently and told her that he’d only make the film if Bale gets the role. Reps for Sony, Bale and co-producer Mark Gordon did not comment for the story.
Fincher was linked to the project last month. The acclaimed filmmaker was reportedly in talks for the job, but other reports suggested that he had not even met with the studio yet.
The Fight Club director has a long history with Sony, having directed The Social Network and the English-language Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for the studio. Pascal and Sony also have a relationship with Bale, since the studio released David O. Russell’s American Hustle last year. That film earned Bale another Oscar nomination.
Although Ashton Kutcher’s Jobs was a flop, this Sony project is drawing much more interest. Sorkin, who wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for The Social Network has been working on his script since May 2012.
Bale is very selective about his roles, especially after winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Russell’s The Fighter and the Dark Knight trilogy. He just finished working with Ridley Scott on Exodus and is expected to take some time with his family.
As for Fincher, he just wrapped up work on Fox’s Gone Girl, which opens in October.
