Construction worker Fabio Hamilton da Cruz died in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Saturday morning, while building the stadium that will host the opening match at the World Cup. It was confirmed that Hamilton da Cruz fell 26 feet while installing temporary seats at the Itaquerao stadium.
According to Reuters, Brazil's Sports Ministry commented on the incident, saying, "The Sports Ministry registers its deepest sympathies over the death of Fabio Hamilton da Cruz. We express our total solidarity with his family and friends."
This was not the first accidental death that has occurred during construction of the new stadium. According to the Associated Press, two construction workers died about four months ago when a crane collapsed at the stadium.
The opening match is scheduled for June 12 and the construction completion date was pushed back to mid-May due to the damages obtained from the first accident. FIFA is unsure at this point if this accident will cause further delays in construction.
