After over 20 years together and two children, Elton John and his longtime partner David Furnish will tie the knot in May. They entered into a civil partnership in 2005, but they will now wed legally in England.
Furnish told the Las Vegas Review Journal that they will get married with their kids Zachary, 3, and Elijah, 16 months, in tow in an intimate ceremony.
“We don’t feel the need to take an extra step legally. But since we’re committed for life, we feel it’s really important to take that step, and take advantage of that amazing change in legislation," Furnish said. "We all live by example.”
He continued to say that although they do “like big parties,” their wedding will be attended by just the kids and a few friends.
“Over eight years ago, we had 650 people on the 21st of December at our house in Windsor,” he said, “but with the kids, everything is different. I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses.”
With same-sex marriage recently legalized in England, Furnish explained it as a “lifting thing,” saying he never thought he would be able to get married and have children 20 years ago.
Now, “with access to more information, the barriers come down.”
