Disney picks Ben Sherwood to replace Anne Sweeney as Disney/ABC president

By Daniel S Levine,

The Walt Disney Company has moved swiftly to name a new president for its lucrative Disney/ABC Television Group. Just days after Anne Sweeney announced her surprising decision to leave the post, Ben Sherwood has been named her replacement.

Sherwood’s current job is ABC News President. He has helped raise Good Morning America to the top of the morning news programs pile, even beating NBC’s Today Show. He also helped launch a joint-venture with Univision.

Disney said in a statement posted at Deadline that Sherwood will become president of Disney/ABC TV on Feb. 1, 2015. He will also take the co-chairman post of Disney Media Networks, another job Sweeney held at the media conglomerate.

“Ben is one of those unique executives who combine rich creative experience with great business acumen,” Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said Monday. He added that Sherwood’s resume makes him “the ideal candidate to oversee the future of the Disney/ABC Television Group.”

Earlier this month, Sweeney told The Hollywood Reporter that she would be leaving her job overseeing one of the top TV companies in the country to fulfill her dream of becoming a TV director.

Sweeney will stay at Disney until the end of January 2015.
