There is some big news for Grey’s Anatomy fans. Isaiah Washington, or Dr. Preston Burke, will be returning to the long-running ABC show seven years after a gay slur scandal that got him fired.
He was fired in 2007 for allegedly calling his then co-star T.R. Knight as a "fa----" in 2006 and repeating it in the press room at the Golden Globes. He will appear in one special episode in May, as his former love interest Cristina Yang (played by Sandra Oh) leaves Seattle Grace Hospital.
Show creator Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter of Washington’s return, "It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey -- he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang."
Washington’s character, Burke, was prominent in the first three seasons of the show. He was last seen in the Season 3 finale, when he stood up Cristina at the altar.
Back in August, Oh announced she would be leaving the show after joining it for its debut in 2005. At the time, Rhimes promised she would get “the exit she deserves.”
