Dave Brockie, the frontman for the heavy metal band GWAR, was found dead late Sunday in his Richmond, Va. home.
The Richmond Police Department confirmed to Style Weekly, which first reported the news, that Brockie was found dead at 6:53 p.m. They do not suspect foul play and Brockie was already deceased when police arrived. Brockie was discovered by his roommate.
The medical examiner will later determine the cause of death.
“Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I’ve ever known,” former Gwar bassist Mike Bishop told Style Weekly. “He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”
GWAR is a Grammy nominated metal band that performs while wearing gory costumes. Every member of the group took on a pseudonym and Brockie used the name “Oderus Urungus,” reports The New York Daily News.
The group’s lead guitarist, Cory Smoot, was found dead on a tour bus in November 2011.
