Dr. Preston Burke, played by Isaiah Washington, is coming back to Seattle Grace Hospital. The news comes as a complete shock to Grey’s Anatomy fans because Washington was fired from the show in 2007 for reportedly using a homophobic slur to refer to co-star T.R. Knight.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Washington will make a guest appearance in a May episode. His return comes as original and beloved actress Sandra Oh prepares to leave the show this season. Oh plays the role of fiery and determined surgeon Cristina Yang who was actually engaged to Washington’s character at one point.
“It's important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey – he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang,” said show creator and writer Shonda Rhimes, reported the Daily Beast.
After leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Washington kept busy appearing in TV shows like Law & Order: LA, Single Ladies and CW’s 100, which premieres this March.
