A new book about John Wayne by Scott Eyman is being released by Simon & Schuster.
The book, John Wayne: The Life and Legend, tells stories about Wayne as an actor and filmmaker. The biography features photos from different points in the actor’s career, including images from Stagecoach, Sands of Iwo Jima, and True Grit. The book tells about his abandoned college plans, his relationship with the military, his place in Hollywood, and his stance in political and social matters.
Eyman presents Wayne as a “good natured actor and filmmaker who created and maintained a persona that Americans took to heart,” according to the Associated Press. The biography talks about Wayne’s films as well as his relationship with co-star Marlene Dietrich, according to Parade.
The independent spirit who blazed his own trail starred in numerous Westerns including The Train Robbers, The Cowboys, How the West Was Won, and The Alamo. He won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for True Grit. Wayne died in 1979.
