Jude Law joins Melissa McCarthy in Paul Feig's 'Susan Cooper'

By Daniel S Levine,

Jude Law is the next A-lister to be paired with Melissa McCarthy, following in the footsteps of Jason Bateman and Sandra Bullock. Law will star in Susan Cooper, which finds McCarthy as a James Bond-style spy.

The casting was first reported by TheWrap, which reported that Law was very close to signing the deal. Variety also reported the news. Neither site said what role Law would play.

McCarthy has been linked to the project since July. It is being set up as a franchise for Fox, which is hoping that it can be as successful as The Heat. Of course, that shouldn’t be too hard a goal, since Susan Cooper is being directed by Paul Feig, who also directed McCarthy in Bridesmaids.

Feig also wrote the script and is producing under his Feigco Entertainment. Jessie Henderson is co-producing and Daria Cercek is overseeing for Fox. The studio scheduled the film for May 22, 2015.

Law was nominated for Oscars for his roles in The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain. Most recently, he has played John Watson in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies and also appears in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. The Anderson movie hits limited theaters this weekend.

Fox has every reason to hope that Susan Cooper odes as well as The Heat. That film grossed $230 million worldwide last year.
