Katy Perry titled herself as feminist in an interview with Australian morning show, Today.
According to E! News, the “Roar” singer was asked if she's a feminist by TV host Karl Stefanovic.
“I used to not really understand what that word meant, and now that I do, it just means that I love myself as a female and I also love men," Perry said, adding, "I am a strong woman. Hear me roar!"
In 2012, however, Perry was criticized for not being a feminist, according to Entertainment Wise.
“I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women,” the singer said, as she accepted the Woman of the Year award at Billboard’s Women in Music.
While the definition of feminism has not yet been concretely defined, Seventeen Magazine wrote an article to shed some light on the word that has negative connotations.
“Some people think being a feminist means you don’t shave your armpits and that you want to bring down guys,” said Julie, 21, creator of a new-wave feminist blog, thefbomb.org. “But that’s not it at all. It’s about girls knowing their potential and not letting anything hold them back.”
What do you think of the feminism definition, and does it apply to Katy Perry?
