'Magic Mike' sequel with Channing Tatum gets director, title

By Daniel S Levine,
Will be called 'Magic Mike XXL'

The Magic Mike sequel is really happening and while Channing Tatum will be returning, he’s not going to be directing it himself. Steven Soderbergh’s replacement has been picked and there is a new title.

Sources close to the project told IndieWire Friday that Greg Jacobs has been tapped to direct. He has been as assistant director on Soderbergh films since King of the Hill and a frequent producer on the films. Jacobs was both a producer and AD on Magic Mike and will be an executive producer on Soderbergh's HBO project The Knack.

It also won’t be Jacobs’ debut as a director. He helmed Criminal (2004) and Emily Blunt’s Wind Chill (2007). In addition, he created Red Oaks for Amazon Studios, but didn’t direct the pilot due to his Magic Mike commitments.

While IndieWire said that an official announcement will come from the studio soon, it’s worth noting that there has long been talk of a Magic Mike sequel. Tatum suggested last year that he may direct it with his creative partner Reid Carolin. Joe Manganiello also told Collider this week that Magic Mike 2 will film in the fall.

As for the title, Magic Mike 2 will be called Magic Mike XXL.
