A man who was seen loading a gun near student housing at Columbus State University in Georgia has been shot and fatally wounded by campus police.
According to WAGA, the police responded to the campus apartment building when they were notified of the suspect. The man took off on foot when the authorities approached him, and after a short chase, he turned to the officers and opened fire. The police fired back and the man was shot.
The campus did not issue a lockdown because officials were not aware that the threat remained. Although some students were around to witness the incident, fortunately, there were no other injuries reported. It is unknown how many students were either nearby or in their apartments at the time of the shooting.
The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries and later pronounced dead while at the facility. The Associated Press noted that the man was not a student of Columbus State University.
"This is a terrible tragedy ... we'll cooperate fully with the investigation ... Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this as well as their families," said Tim Mescon, the president of the university.
The incident is still under investigation, and the university is fully cooperating with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Counseling services are being offered to students if needed.
