Nickelodeon is expanding its Kids’ Choice Awards to sports with the first Kids Choice Sports show, which will honor kids’ favorite sports stars. Former NFL star and current TV personality Michael Strahan has been picked to host.
Strahan, who currently co-hosts Live! With Kelly and Michael and Fox NFL Sunday, will also executive produce Kids’ Sports Choice 2014, Nickelodeon said in a statement. The event will take place at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on Thursday, July 17.
Strahan said it was an honor to be picked for the job. “As an athlete and as a father to four kids who grew up with Nickelodeon, I know firsthand what an important role sports play in kids’ lives,” the former New York Giants player said. “This is going to be a kids’ Super Bowl-sized event that will have the best athletes, the best entertainment, the most fun, and of course the best slimings the world of sports has ever seen for the whole family to watch together.”
While the award winners will be picked by kids, there will be a special council of major sports figures who will give their thoughts on the nominees and categories. The council includes Ken Griffey Jr., Deion Sanders, Michael Phelps, Tony Hawk, Misty May-Treanor, Cal Ripken Jr. and many others.
Nickelodeon is also getting this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards all set. The March 29 ceremony will include appearances from The Big Bang Theory stars Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco and Glee’s Lea Michele. Mark Wahlberg is hosting.
