New England Patriots re-sign wide receiver Julian Edelman

The New England Patriots made an effort to keep quarterback Tom Brady happy by re-signing one of his favorite targets in Julian Edelman. Edelman emerged last season after Wes Welker departed for the Denver Broncos.

According to Boston Globe, the length and financial terms of the contract are still unknown. Edelman had a breakout season for the Patriots by setting career-highs with 105 catches and 1,056 receiving yards. He also caught six touchdown receptions.

Edelman was also a valuable punt returner for the Patriots, according to ESPN. He averaged 10.7 yards per return in 2013.

Edelman had an injury history before the 2013 season, which was why he was not given a long-term contract before. He also took advantage of a receiving corps that lost Rob Gronkowski to an injury, Welker to the Broncos and Aaron Hernandez to jail.

This was Edelman's second consecutive year as an unrestricted free agent, and he received just over $1 million over a one-year contract if he met incentives.

The Patriots will look to improve their passing offense as Edelman enters his second season as one of Brady's main targets.
