A 12-year-old boy in New York City shot his 14-year-old sister in the abdomen while playing with a gun.
According to NY1 News, the boy is in custody after he accidentally shot her early Friday morning while playing with a .22-caliber Colt revolver.
The New York Daily News reported that the incident happened at a crowded apartment in the Jamaica, Queens section of the city.
The boy was told to put the gun down by at least two adults who woke up at 2:25 a.m. and saw the loaded gun in his hand. He ignored both their orders and shot his sibling.
"She ... tells him, ‘Stop playing with the gun.’ And he’s like, ‘Don’t worry about it,’" a police source told the Daily News. "He starts to pull the trigger, and the gun goes off."
She was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover as her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
A neighbor said that the children's mother and her boyfriend are "nice people." A police source told the Daily News that if the mother didn't know her boy had the gun, she's not likely to be charged.
News like this has become far too common and it begs the question of why parents who have a gun in a home with children there, are not being responsible and locking their weapons up. Maybe if they did horrible accidents like this could be avoided.
