Nick Cannon hit with backlash for using 'whiteface' to promote new album

By Alicia Mayle,

Nick Cannon sparked controversy when he posted a picture of himself as a Caucasian man with the use of whiteface on Instagram.

Cannon put on makeup to transform into Connor Smallnut, a character he used to promote his new album, White People Party Music.

Many called Cannon out, and he fired back on Twitter with, “It’s funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!” according to E! Online.

The America’s Got Talent host continued to banter with other tweeters, then daring them to trying wearing blackface.

In an interview with US Weekly’s entertainment director Ian Drew, Cannon explained how he came up with his new album's name.

He said, “You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody. They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album Purple People Party Music and you'd still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?”

Cannon’s White People Party Music will be released in stores April 1.
