Oscar Pistorius broke down in court on Thursday as a neighbor testified about trying to save Reeva Steenkamp.
CNN reported that witness Johan Stipp, a radiologist who lived nearby, testified that he went to Pistorius' home after hearing gunshots and said he saw Steenkamp’s mortally wounded body. He provided details about how her brain tissue was mixed with blood and Pistorius was praying for her to live.
"I remember the first thing he said when I got there was, 'I shot her, I thought she was a burglar and I shot her,'" Stipp recalled.
ABC News noted that the doctor also testified that he tried to help, even though Steenkamp showed no signs of life.
"She had no pulse in the neck, she had no peripheral pulse. She had no breathing movements that she made," Stipp said.
The strong testimony was given on the fourth day of Pistorius' murder trial.
The amputee sprinter is accused of murdering his model girlfriend last Valentine’s Day. He has pleaded not guilty and maintains that he mistook her for an intruder.
