Port Authority chairman David Samson resigns

By Kyle Johnson,

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced on Friday that the Port Authority chairman had turned in his resignation only a day after a report was released that exonerated the governor of involvement in the George Washington Bridge closures.

Christie spoke at a news conference and said that chairman David Samson had long talked about stepping away from his position and decided that now was the time, reports Reuters. "David tendered his resignation to me this afternoon, effective immediately."

The resignation comes as the governor is still embroiled over the "Bridgegate" scandal, despite a report released Thursday that pointed the blame elsewhere, but not at Christie himself.

Former federal prosecutor Randy Mastro who was involved in putting together the report said, "We found that Gov. Christie had no knowledge beforehand" of the lane closures.

Many critics haven't been swayed by the report because Christie picked the law firm that looked into the matter.

Christie went on Nightline Thursday night and spoke with Diane Sawyer where he explained that the report is indeed credible.

"These people have their own professional and personal reputations," he said. "Six of them were former federal prosecutors. They're not going to whitewash anything for me and put their reputations at stake."
