‘Ride Along 2,’ ‘The Revenant’ power past ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ at box office

The box office finally has a new champion. Kevin Hart and Ice Cube knocked the Force down this weekend, with Ride Along 2 speeding past the finish line first.

Universal’s Ride Along 2 opened to $36 million on nearly the same weekend the original cop comedy opened in 2014. That film opened to $41.5 million and eventually grossed $134.9 million in North America.

The Revenant came in second after racking up 12 Oscar nominations on Thursday. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film grossed $29.5 million, bringing its total to $87.6 million. That’s already more than director Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman, which grossed $42.3 million during its entire run domestically. That film won the Best Picture Oscar and The Revenant has a chance to do the same.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens took in $25.1 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $851 million. It remains the only film in North American history to hit $800 million. The film also hit $1.0 billion from foreign territories, so its worldwide total is now $1.8 billion.

Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi made just $16 million. The Paramount movie was one of the worst openings in Bay’s career. Even his last non-Transformers movie, Pain & Gain, opened to $20.2 million.

Daddy’s Home with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg came in fifth with $9.3 million. The film has been a ‘sleeper’ hit behind Star Wars and its total is now $129.2 million.

The Big Short was the only other Oscar-nominated film to stay in the Top 10 this weekend, making $5.2 million. The Wall Street comedy is up to $50.5 million.
