By Daniel S Levine,

Showtime said Monday that it has renewed Nurse Jackie for a seventh season, even though the show’s sixth season is still two weeks away.

David Nevins, President, Showtime Networks Inc., said that the acclaimed dramedy will get another season. It is produced by Showtime and Lionsgate and filming for season seven starts later this year in New York.

Falco stars as Jackie Peyton, an emergency room nurse. The half-hour show, which began in 2009, has earned several awards, including Merritt Weaver’s Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Emmy win earlier this year. Falco won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy in 2010. The show has also earned four Golden Globe nominations. Its showrunner is Clyde Phillips.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Peter Facinelli will not be returning as a series regular for season seven. The Twilight actor recently snagged a lead role in the NBC pilot Odyssey. He will be welcomed back at Nurse Jackie as a guest star.

Nurse Jackie’s fifth season averaged 3.13 million viewers. The sixth season premieres on April 13 at 9 p.m.
