Shuttle bus crash kills one, injures 16

A shuttle bus crash south of the nation’s capital killed one person and injured 16 others early Sunday morning.

According to NBC Washington, the crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. when the American Transportation shuttle bus was traveling south on Interstate 95 near Lorton, Va.

Virginia State Police said that witnesses reported a white four-door passenger vehicle traveling at high speed swerve into the bus’ lane, causing the accident. The driver of the bus tried to avoid a collision and swerved to the right. The bus then veered off the road, hit a guardrail, and overturned.

The speeding sedan never stopped and police are searching for the vehicle.

The 16 passengers aboard the bus and the driver, were all transported to area hospitals. One passenger, who suffered serious injuries, died at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

WTOP noted that this is the second bus crash in a week on the heavily-traveled Virginia roadway. In that incident, the bus driver was charged with reckless driving and none of the 58 passengers had life-threatening injuries.
