In New Orleans, Mardi Gras is underway.
The Mardi Gras celebration came to North America from Paris, according to New Orleans Online. Mardi Gras is also known as Fat Tuesday. Party-goers celebrate decadence before the ritual fasting that begins on Ash Wednesday.
During Mardi Gras, floats parade down Bourbon Street. In New Orleans, krewes arrange the festivities. Krewe is a “fanciful spelling of crew,” according to Mark Romig, president and CEO of New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corp. in USA Today. Each organization chooses a royal court. People celebrating in New Orleans can choose to ride on floats or cheer from the balcony. Music performances are held at the Superdome in the evening.
