Authorities have said that a sailor was fatally shot by a civilian, who got on to a U.S. Navy destroyer at Virginia's Naval Station Norfolk.
According to CNN, Navy officials announced on Tuesday that a male civilian breached security and boarded destroyer USS Mahan around 11:20 Monday night, where he shot the sailor before personnel killed him.
WVEC noted that the suspect gained access onto the ship after a struggle in which he was able to disarm a Petty Officer he encountered keeping watch on the Mahan’s quarterdeck.
Two other sailors came to help the unarmed guard and the civilian used the officer’s pistol to shoot one of them.
Security forces on base then shot the suspect.
Both the male sailor and civilian suspect were pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. The shooting is under investigation.
The USS Mahan is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. She is the 22nd Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and the first Flight II variant.
