The movies continued at SXSW, the music and film festival that is currently taking place in Austin, Texas, this weekend. Veronica Mars, the film based on the cult series starring Kristen Bell, was shown at the event.
The film, directed by series creator Rob Thomas, screened on Saturday, according to the LA Times. It features Bell as Veronica Mars, a teenage private eye trying to solve a murder mystery. Bell’s co-stars include Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni.
There was plenty of advance press about the film and distributors are making the now-common move of releasing the movie for digital download the same day as the theatrical release. The film will also be available for video on demand beginning March 14.
Kickstarter helped make the movie happen after the television show by the same name was cancelled. According to Indiewire, Thomas told fans at the SXSW screening, “Finally, most important -- and I think I can say this more than any other movie that has ever been made -- thank you to the fans of Veronica Mars. The Kickstarter backers, we would not exist without you."
He continued, "This was the only way this movie was going to get made. Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the movie."
