Animal Planet's 'River Monsters' returns with Amazon shipwreck story

By Marcina Zaccaria ,

Animal Planet announced that many of its popular shows are returning this season, including River Monsters.

This Sunday's episode is about the Sobra Santos. In the episode, we see an overcrowded ship that sank in the Amazon at an inopportune time. The ship went down near a fish processing plant that attracted a hungry and vicious type of catfish. Some 200 people were killed, and many body parts of victims were missing. In the episode, it is revealed that catfish have fed on human remains.

"We will never know for sure," host Jeremy Wade told The Associated Press. "What we're looking into is all the possibilities, what could have happened to all of the people."

In the episode, Wade searches through the dangerous waters of the Amazon where he found toothy piranha and candiru. River Monsters is Animal Planet’s most popular series.

Other shows slated to return on Animal Planet include Puppy Bowl and Bulls & Parolees, the network said this week.

River Monsters begins its sixth season Sunday at 9 p.m.
