'Goldbergs' get Lucasfilm approval for 'Star Wars' Day episode, follows 'Big Bang Theory'

By Daniel S Levine,

Considering the series is set in the 1980s, The Goldbergs may as well have their own tribute episode to the biggest franchise of the decade, Star Wars. A day after The Big Bang Theory got the Lucasfilm stamp of approval for a Star Wars episode, The Goldbergs got one too.

The episode, titled “A Wrestler Named Goldberg,” will be set in 1983, when Return of the Jedi opened. Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!) will guest star as a costumed Star Wars fan waiting for the movie to open, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The Goldbergs is produced by Sony Pictures TV and airs on ABC, a member of the Disney family. As Disney also now owns Lucasfilm, this is the latest example of corporate synergy after taking over George Lucas’ company.

On Wednesday, it was announced that CBS’ The Big Bang Theory will also get to do a Star Wars episode. The Goldbergs’ special airs on May 6, while Big Bang’s will premiere on May 1. Bob Newhart will appear in Big Bang.

Both shows are timed for Star Wars Day, which is on May 4. (Just so everyone can say “May the 4th be with you.”)
