'Hawaii Five-0' Recap: Season Four, Episode 18

At the beginning of the episode, Chin and Jerry go to their high school reunion, where one of their classmates, Laura Richmond, is killed. Laura is one of the heirs of the Macadamia Nut fortune.

Next scene is Danny and McGarrett in Cambodia in search of the mysterious grave the CIA does not want McGarrett to find.

When they do find the location of the grave, it has been unearthed, with the empty coffin on top side – empty, that is, except for a few strands of hair, which McGarrett takes for closer examination.

Back at the reunion, Kono and Catherine have joined Chin and Jerry. The place has been put on lockdown. They discover that Laura has not been back to Oahu in 25 years. She has never corresponded with anyone nor shown an interest in anyone on the Island for all that time. They also find an ace of spades card on her body.

Kono finds out Laura went to the bank two hours before the reunion and withdrew $200,000 in cash from her Trust.

McGarrett arrives on scene (back in town) and hands an envelope to Max containing the hair he found in Cambodia. He wants Max to run DNA on it without asking any questions.

McGarrett and Danny visit the Macadamia Nut Estate but find no answers. While there, Chin gets a call from Kono that the prints on the card on Laura’s body belong to another classmate, Tony Gibson, who has a record for blackmail, among other things. Chin and McGarrett meet Danny at the Pacific Marina Inn, where Tony is working as a magician of sorts.

When arrested and taken back to Five-0 HQ, Gibson insists he “planted” the cards on a lot of the classmates. He is later cleared when Kono interrupts the interrogation to tell McGarrett that he accepted the gig at the hotel before Laura landed on the Island.

Kono later also discovers Laura withdrew the cash to pay the hospital bill of a Nina Johnson.

Meanwhile, McGarrett makes an impromptu visit to CIA Agent Sam Connors by waiting outside for him to leave his office. He confronts Connors about digging up the body in Cambodia. Connors won’t talk but finally asks that McGarrett return at 20:00 hours.

Kono and Chin visit Nina, who does not know Laura. Nina, however, has a son, Korey, that disappeared 25 years ago. He was a skilled surfer. When Chin and Kono check out his room, Kono sees a series of photos of him with Laura. They believe Laura and Korey were involved and that perhaps her boyfriend Alan Kim, one of Chin’s classmates, found out about it and killed him.

Chin and Kono arrive at Lim’s house in time to see him being taken away on a stretcher and put into a waiting ambulance. He has been beaten.

As Danny and McGarrett arrive at the hospital, McGarrett gets a call from Max, telling him the sample for DNA results was lost somewhere between the Medical Examiner’s Office and the lab. McGarrett tells him not to worry about it, then tells Danny he held back some of the sample.

At the hospital, Duke brings a flash drive containing witness statements from the investigation on Korey’s disappearance 25 years earlier. There is a statement from Laura giving Alan an alibi for the time of the surfer’s disappearance.

Catherine calls McGarrett about a strange fact from Max that one of Laura’s hands had traces of something one would use to develop film. She tells McGarrett that she spoke to a film developer that had a shop in one of the areas Laura visited before the reunion. The developer told her that Laura asked about developing 35mm film. He had told her he could do it, but she did not have it with her.

Chin says maybe Laura did not have time to get the film before her death. Then, he says that’s probably why she came to the reunion. Catherine and Chin go back to the location of the reunion and remove some time capsules. Chin discovers 35mm film in one of them. The two take the film to Jerry, who develops it. It is a photo of Bradley (Laura’s brother), Laura, and Alan.

When the Team returns to the Estate, Bradley has gone out to the maze in the back of the house. They locate him with the help of Kamekona and his helicopter, and they arrest him. He tells them that he did not kill his sister, that Alan did it.

They then go to the hospital to arrest Alan, who eventually tells them he and Bradley just wanted to teach Korey a lesson. They beat him up, but he fell and hit his head on a rock. Laura was going to tell the whole thing.

As the episode ends, McGarrett returns to Agent Connors’ office, only to find it swept clean and Connors nowhere to be found. As he is about to leave, the phone rings. The voice on the other end tells McGarrett that Agent Connors never existed, and neither did the grave in Cambodia. McGarrett tells the person on the other end that the disappearance of a CIA Agent nor the empty grave would stop him from trying to find out what this all means in connection with his mother.
