It has been revealed that Lorde's inspiration behind "Royals" was a very unlikely source. The inspiration behind the song came from baseball player, George Brett and she finally got to actually meet him.
TMZ reported that Lorde was able to meet the Hall of Fame third baseman in Kansas City backstage in Las Vegas.
Brett is known for the famous "Pine Tar Incident." That incident happened against the New York Yankees, when umpires disallowed his home run back in 1983 because he used a tempered - should be "tampered" bat.
The "Team" singer pulled inspiration from a National Geographic image that showed Brett singing autographs for fans, the shirt that Brett was wearing when the picture was taken said 'Royals.' Lorde said just seeing that image and the word was what started her inspiration to write the song.
Kansas City Star added that the photo was published back in July of 1976.
"He was a baseball player and his shirt said, ‘Royals,’” Lorde explained in an interview with VH1 in September. “It was just that word. It’s really cool.”
